Gender-Bending Disney Characters Challenge Popular Stereotypes [Pics]
Tumblr artists are tweaking images of classic Disney characters to look like the opposite gender.
Inspired by Tumblr artist The Crowned Heart and his Gay Disney series, TT Bret decided edit Disney characters to break the mold on what an ideal character is. In the Genderbent Disney, Bret edited some of Disney’s most beloved leading men and women to make them into the opposite gender.
Disney has often been criticized for its gender stereotyping – especially when it comes to the ideal of princesses and their sole dream of being save by a prince. They received some credit when Frozen, a story about sisterly love rather than romantic love, came out last year, but even Princess Elsa had huge anime eyes, a tiny waist and dress with a slit to there. Bret’s series shows how these ideals can be subverted, to create diverse characters that don’t all look the same. The artist told The Huffington Post:
It’s important to challenge stereotypes. The images of normalcy and beauty that the media portrays are very limited, as well and the ideals of gender and sexuality. In order to create acceptance, we need to start with our media. Why not start with more diverse character designs? “Ideal human traits” should apply to everyone, not just a limited few.
