Rachel Shechtman: Top Tips For Young Entrepreneurs [PSFK 2014]

No idea is too big or too crazy, and don't let perfectionism get in the way of finishing a project.

  • 11 april 2014

In anticipation of her talk with Will Berman at the PSFK CONFERENCE 2014 on April 11th, we caught up with retail innovator and STORY founder Rachel Shechtman about her unique perspective on entrepreneurship. Rachel hosts ‘Pitch Nights‘ where makers and entrepreneurs come to present their goods and businesses for evaluation, and it was at one of these events that she met Will, a young denim goods maker with a passion for his product. They will be presenting together on the PSFK stage on April 11th.

What inspired you to start Pitch Night?

I have always been obsessed with finding new things and meeting new businesses, designers, makers. I had a startup I never started in 1999 that was part incubator / co-op for emerging brands. And now with STORY, we have a physical space to share, display and amplify amazing stories from independent makers while also democratizing access in the physical world.

Do we offer enough exposure of young entrepreneurs in our country?

I think we are getting better about supporting and inspiring young entrepreneurs but this is just the beginning. Technology and the web enable discovery and participation, and I think we have barely scratched the surface of what’s to come.

What are some key tips that you would give to people thinking about starting their own business?

– Hire slow fire fast (as a wise friend Mr Ben Lerer once advised me).
– Don’t be afraid to ask for help
– No idea is too big or too crazy – do it! And don’t let perfection get in the way of making something happen…you will iterate.
– Sleep

What was the thing that struck you about Will when you first met?

His confidence, passion and overwhelming entrepreneurial spirit! If I hadn’t seen Will before his pitch, and just heard him – I would have thought he was in his thirties – an experienced designer, with success and years under his belt. Our entire STORY team fell in love instantly and he is now an extended member of our STORY family.

Thanks Rachel!
