MoMA Design Store Will Now Sell Successful Kickstarter Projects
Museum store to sell several crowdfunded items during annual NYCxDESIGN Festival.
Crowdfunding campaigns have led to numerous contributions in the arts, fashion, and technology, and when it comes to crowdfunding Kickstarter is king. Despite the numerous successful projects that come out of Kickstarter, many of these items are hard to find once the funding period comes to an end. MoMA Design Store, being made aware of this problem, has decided to sell several successful Kickstarter projects during this year’s NYCxDESIGN.
NYCxDESIGN is an annual festival in New York City that brings together designs in all different disciplines and hosts exhibitions, panels, installations, open studios and more. In honor of the festival, the MoMA Design Store has launched a retail collection in collaboration with Kickstarter; it will sell 24 successfully kickstarted designs.
The range of products offered on Kickstarter is numerous, and MoMA has chosen a variety of items to sell. One of the saleable goods will be Gigs2Go, a palm sized quatro of tear away thumb drives that holds up to 8 gigabytes of content. The Projecto Slide Projector, will be available for purchase. It is a pocket-sized projector that will display Instagram photos as a slideshow. Also for sale is the Carpenter Watch, the first all-natural wood based watch with soft straps, and the Present Clock– an innovative clock that takes a full year to make one circuit and is available exclusively through MoMA.
According to Emmanuel Platt, the Director of Merchandising at MoMA, many of the innovative designs that impressed him kept leading him back to Kickstarter. He wanted to celebrate the ingenuity that has come from the company and thought NYCxDESIGN would be a perfect opportunity.
NYCxDESIGN will run from May 9th-20th, and Kickstarted goods will be available in both the original MoMA Design Store and the MoMA Design Store Soho from May 13th- June16th. For an early sneak peak, check out the photos below.
