A design student's approach to help people remember their deceased loved ones

Design student Geraldine Spilker has found a way to make mourning a tangible experience. Spilker, a student at Design Academy Eindhoven, fashioned the prototype that she calls Momento, which combines the resin with ashes from loved ones so that those left behind might have something easier to carry than an urn.

Spilker says she wants to offer mourners a way to honor the cremation wishes of those who have died without having to leave behind the ashes. So far, Spilker has made objects with the ashes of animals and thinks that the process helps children to grieve over the loss of a pet. She hopes to begin work with human remains in the near future.

U.S. volleyball player Misty Mae Treanor had a similar idea when she brought her mother’s ashes to the 2004 Athens Olympics and again to the 2008 Beijing Olympics in a camera film pot. Treanor said she wanted her mother to be part of her experience and even sprinkled some of her ashes onto the sand on the court. Perhaps Treanor would appreciate Spilker’s project, which aims to keep those we miss from missing out on our day-to-day accomplishments, on or off the Olympic grounds.
