Living in a World with Instant Access to Everything
Across the globe, digital applications are connecting us with the products and services we need at a moment's notice
If there’s one thing we could all use, it’s more time. While no genius entrepreneurs have yet figured out a way to give us more hours in the day, a number of them are helping us take some of those precious minutes back with a wave of on-demand applications. With the push of a button it’s now possible to have virtually any product or service delivered directly to you at a moment’s notice.
In our Live, Work, Play Better Report, the team at PSFK explores the growing marketplace of mobile tools equipped to handle nearly any need as it arises, an idea we’re calling “Instant Everything.”
This always on, digital connectivity enables us to cross off more of our to-dos, while still enjoying the people and experiences that really matter. Which means you can stay late at the office to prep for that big presentation, get in a few more reps at the gym, have that drink with your friends or just relax at home, knowing that all of the other things you need to accomplish are going to get done.
To get you up to speed on how this is being addressed across the region, we’ve put together a roundup of some of the most interesting services.
Personal Shopper for Your Pantry
If you’re tired of takeout, but struggle to find time to get yourself to the grocery store for a shop, there is a growing slate of apps that will bring the food directly to your kitchen. India-based startup Grofers is quickly expanding to bring on-demand delivery of fresh goods and household items to residents of Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai.
The Grofers model differs from other delivery startups on two fronts. First, they’re super quick. At 90 minutes or less, they’re leveraging an army of personnel to stock pantries. Then, instead of warehousing products, Grofers works with small brick-and-mortar retailers to photograph and upload their own inventory so that the range of products (more than 500,000 unique items) reflects the diversity of tastes in the communities they serve.
Private Parking Attendant
The conveniences of driving can often be outweighed by the frustrations of finding parking. A study conducted in the United States suggests that in dense urban areas, as much as 30 percent of downtown traffic is just drivers circling for a spot. At four to 14 minutes per park, the process of finding a spot can become quite time consuming—particularly as most people are already time-poor.
In five cities across China, startup Tingchebao wants to help alleviate some of this driving-related stress and anxiety by locating nearby spaces, listing their cost and allowing users to reserve them ahead of time. Recently, the app has added an on-demand valet service, so that a tap of your phone summons a driver to park your car, and another to summon the car back when you’re ready to go.
Concierge For Your Closet
In exchange for ready access to fantastic culture, food and nightlife, most city dwellers are willing to sacrifice on space. But smaller apartments mean less room to store all that stuff. Thankfully, services like Hong Kong startup Boxful make it painless to offload your excess items and easily retrieve them when you need them back, all via smartphone. Calling themselves “your infinite closet,” Boxful will deliver their signature lime green bins to your doorstep and then, at your request, whisk them off to a warehouse facility where they are stored until, with a few taps, you can have any bin brought back.
Whether these mobile services are solving real problems or occasionally catering to our whims, they’re all providing access to a network prepped to accommodate nearly any one of our needs, whenever and wherever they arise. This new set of tools enables every one of us to more efficiently orchestrate our daily lives with a few screen taps (and a small price), putting us in a position to take that extra time and effort and put it to use in more meaningful ways.
