The ridesharing app is looking into the development of nimble aircraft for urban environments

In an onstage interview, Uber products head Jeff Holden told Recode’s Kara Swisher how they’re looking into offering short-haul flights. But instead of needing expensive infrastructure, this vertical takeoff transport will be able to land within smaller spaces. Uber has specifically been looking at VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircrafts to do the job.

Unlike the more common helicopter, these VTOL aircraft will have more rotors and could be far more silent. Just imagine the common hobby drone today but bigger and able to carry a full grown human.

While it’s hard to imagine personal fliers occupying city skies, it is a method of transportation worth looking at where Uber cars experience the worse traffic (like Manila). From being everyone’s personal driver, Uber can soon become everyone’s private airline.
