In the 2006 movie This is England, a young aspiring skinhead drags his mother to the local shop to be outfitted in the standard “uniform”- Doc Martin boots, tight black Levis, red suspenders, and a Fred Perry polo shirt. The latter of these brands, Fred Perry, has recently come under fire by the German government for being part of the current dress code for right-wing extremists and Neo- Nazis, which has resulted in Berlin’s police officers being warned about, and in some cases banned from wearing, the eponymous label. In addition to Fred Perry, officers seen wearing Ben Sherman, Lonsdale, [...]

If you ever thought you heard echoes under the high heels of women on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, it’s possible you weren’t just hearing things. In 1981, Brooklyn native Bob Diamond confirmed the existence of a massive tunnel that stretches some 1,600 feet under Atlantic Ave. Recently, there has been a flurry of renewed interest in the tunnel, including a documentary currently in production about Diamond’s search. In fact, the story of Diamond’s quest nearly rivals the excitement of his discovery.
In the late 1970s, Diamond was an engineering student with a taste for New York transit lore. He first heard [...]

While the new iPod Shuffle is certainly small, the new sound features and design are what make the pinky size product a potential heavy weight in the mp3 player arena. The third generation iPod Shuffle can talk in 14 languages, informing us the artist and title of song we are listening to. In addition, for the first time in Shuffle history, the controls are mounted on the headphone lead. The device can hold 4GB of music (around 1000 songs) and comes in either black

Brooklyn based wallpaper designer and commercial artist Dan Funderburgh inspires us to stop using our hands for typing and start using them for constructing. With a love for decorative arts, his new collection of saws entitled “My Name is a Killing Word” carries on his legacy of intricate design and craftsmanship. These saws are verification that the quality and detail of his work continues to grow (the only wood we’d allow them to touch is the stud in our wall…). Funderburgh recently received a grant from FEAST to adorn North Brooklyn with his innovative wallpaper. His work can also be [...]

Underground restaurants are the dining equivalent of a speak-easy or a rave. Whether they are entirely legal or not is a bit of a grey area. But this is part of their allure. There’s something very intoxicating about the combination of being “in the know” and illicitness that creates an experience that people can’t help but talk about. It’s word of mouth marketing at its most powerful.
Underground restaurants are new to the UK in the guise of MsMarmitelover’s Underground Restaurant in Kilburn and Horton Jupiter’s Secret Ingredient in Hackney, but are much more familiar in other parts of the world. [...]

Gallery owner and artist Jonathan Ferrara, from the Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans, is pushing the city’s creative forces to the edge while relying on the strong foundation he has built for over a decade. While allowing young artists to exhibit their individual voices, Ferrara’s gallery is speaking volumes nationally with sales reaching 80% out of state. The gallery is currently showing Camouflage by artist Sidonie Villere, whose minimalist paintings are a portrait of self-preservation. The all-white collection reflects ideas of blending in and masking oneself, which is relevant in a time where privacy seems to be near extinction. [...]

Gored: v. to pierce with or as if with a horn or tusk.
A new campaign by the American Heart Association bears an unfortunate resemblance to the popular (RED) campaign we’ve discussed a bit (controversially) here before. The latter campaign, which raises awareness of AIDS/HIV around the world, embeds the word red in other words, e.g. desi(red) and inspi(red) in various products. The Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign, while probably equally as inspired, seems a little less thought out. This poster we saw outside a subway stop in NYC beared the words “go” and “red” that, when [...]

Amid the hubbub of large American brewers consolidating operations and getting into bed with foreign ownership, there are some encouraging, if not impressive environmental stories to be told.
Anheuser-Busch, who last week is celebrating 30 years of their aluminum recycling program (and who claims to recycle five cans for every four they produce) announced they plan to rely on renewable fuels for 15% of their combined energy needs by 2010.
This will be done with piping in biogas (methane) from landfills and a Bio-energy Recovery System (BERS) that uses bacteria to convert post-brewing waste materials into fuel.

12seconds.tv (currently by invite-only) is a new microblogging platform that allows users to record and share short video snippets of their life – what they are doing, where they are, and what’s on their minds. Anyone with a webcam or mobile video recording capability can use the free service.
Just like Twitter’s 140 character limit, 12seconds has a limit of, well you guessed it, 12 seconds. The idea is to share brief moments of your life, instantaneously, spontaneously, and on the go. Users also have the option of linking their 12seconds accounts to their Twitter accounts.

If fashion is moving away from seasons and schedules, where does that leave the fashion show?
What used to be a first-look for buyers, editors and top-tier clients has been pushing up against pure spectacle for some time. Last October, Fendi shunned the tents and used the Great Wall of China for their catwalk at a cost of approximately $10MM.
Potentially, shows could become brand-centric showcases, rather than product-driven events. Parties, concert tours, installations or hybrid commerce/event formats connect more viscerally with audiences — including a wider range of customers. Shifting the focus from product to brand would also create continuity from [...]

In Japan, the complexity of the telecoms industry has reached such a high level, the government recently announced it’s support of a private sector initiative to license official experts in mobile technologies – these cell phone “sommeliers” would even have to pass exams to maintain their position.

PSFK recently had the chance to partake in a conference call discussing Timberland’s newest Corporate Social Responsibility report. The organization has set up an independent panel to aid in the discussion surrounding their movement towards creating more transparent business practices. The company has been making an increasing effort in asking for assistance from their consumers, critics and business leaders.
