Yes, I can get it online, but I’m enough of an old fart that I like to relax with a hard copy over my morning coffee. As I’m sure many of you know, I hosted two panels at the PSFK “Good Ideas” conference at the Soho House in New York last Thursday. The subject of the meeting was “Advertising.” Which, surprisingly, had never been dealt with as a stand-alone subject at any of the previous “Good Ideas” shindigs. I’ve been accused of Twitter bashing on both my blogs and columns. To which I have to admit, there is some truth to that, but as I’ve tried to explain many times, it isn’t because I have anything against it as a communications platform, or that I don’t think, as a business, it will ever make anything close to the astronomical numbers people are punting around. I sometimes have to laugh at how we in the communications industry, whether it be advertising, media, marketing, music, films, pop culture, whatever, actually have the temerity and chutzpa to think we have any kind of influence over what the great unwashed masses out there think about, spend their money on and do with their miserable lives. Listen up guys. We don’t.
In spite of all the grandiose claims made by BDA’s and the increasingly “reality TV” driven, and hopelessly irrelevant cable networks, not to mention the oompaloompa, “blob” like growth of social media… The “Adverati” and their deep pockets clients [...]

In the last week, the bad news about the current state of BDA’s (Big Dumb Agencies,) keeps getting worse. Publicis announced Q2 2009 earnings, saying that the recession, which started in 2007, was “unexpectedly steep,” and the company was facing “increasingly extreme” market corrections. Net income was down nearly 14%, and they are also in the bag to General Motors for $15 million. Over at Omnicom net income was down nearly 25% and they are talking about a further round of layoffs on top of the 3,500 people they’ve axed in the last few months. It’s the same dismal picture [...]

Am I the only one who finds it somewhat bizarre that Apple is threatening to sue Microsoft over its “Laptop Hunters” TV campaign? I mean, the “eighty hours a week, and proud of it” mob in Cupertino have been kicking the crap out of Microsoft for years with its “I’m a PC – I’m a Mac” campaign, pointing out the numerous ways a Mac offers significant advances in everything from the operating system, to the applications, to its ease of use. Now apparently, Apple is throwing a hissy fit, ‘cos the Redmond geeks have the temerity to suggest that a [...]

Seems like Chris Anderson may have another best selling book on his hands with “Free: The future of a Radical Price.” Except he’s going to give the digital version away for free, which means it won’t be exactly a best seller, more like a best give away. Wonder where that will go on the New York Times best seller list? Anyway, the editor of Wired, which used to be a good mag, ‘til it sold its soulgeor for a potage of booze, car and entertainment advertising, has come up with this brilliant theory that the way to succeed in business [...]

The last few weeks have been busy ones in the eBook space. Amazon launched its man-hole cover sized Kindle DX to generally favorable reviews. There’s talk about them launching a color version in the near future and one analyst is forecasting sales of 900,000 units in 2009, rising to 1.4 million in 2010. When you consider these babies start at $350 and go up from there, even if you believe Amazon’s claim that it costs them $150 to manufacture each unit – Which is absolute bullshit – It’s no wonder Bezos has an idiotic grin perpetually plastered on his face. I had to laugh, when I read the piece in the New York Times about how LinkedIn was asking for volunteers to translate their site into dozens of different languages – Right now, it’s only available in English, Spanish, French and German – So they are looking for fucktards willing to do the job in Esperanto and Klingon and whatever else will make them a shitload of money. And they are willing to pay these volunteers… Fuck all! Because one of the reasons given is that it will be a fun thing to do. You have to wonder at the [...]
