After successively opening 4 stores throughout NYC (in Soho, Times Square, Chelsea, and the most recent one inside the updated Jetblue terminal at JFK), MUJI has opened the doors of its new online store, making its sleek, minimalist Japanese design available to everyone in the US. (Probably a better idea than opening a flagship store in a Des Moines Mall right now…)

Traditionally, the New York way of dealing with stuff that’s lost its right to be part of our apartments or offices is to put it on the street and wait for it to disappear. Obviously, this process isn’t great for waste that shouldn’t end up in a landfill or can’t be dispersed by the wind – like electronics. However community-based recycling programs are sporadic with collection and lack funding, and commercial disposal for businesses is pricey.

Ink and toner cartridges are expensive and extremely difficult to recycle – making ink conservation a smart way to cut costs and help the environment. From an agency that sounds a bit like a 1960’s NASA coup comes a solution that makes a lot of sense when you take a closer look: Dutch designers SPRANQ creative communications have developed a font that uses up to 20% less ink by omitting parts of the letter’s fillings. Ecofont is based on the open source type face Vera Sans, and prints best at 9 or 10 pt on laser printers. It is is [...]

One of the latest examples of Buckminster Fuller’s iconic geodesic domes, The Fly’s Eye Dome, has been re-assembled at La Guardia Place in New York. The Center for Architecture New York teamed up with the Buckminster Fuller Institute, Max Protetch Gallery and some local institutions to put this prototype from the late 1970’s on temporary display.
