Open Soon/Opening Now: The Art of the Pop Up
Over the last couple of years, we’ve chronicled the rise of brands creating pop-up stores to earn street cache. In an interesting twist of art imitating advertising, Amsterdam-based artist Laurence Aegerter has created the Opening Soon/Opening Now series of pop-up events and stores that address gentrification within Amsterdam (part of the Red A.I.R. program). Staging the project within a former brothel over the course of the past year, Aegerter has transformed the space into a library, a Turkish snack bar, a golf club and a soon to be functioning public swimming pool among others.

Fake Prison Break with Projectors in Amsterdam
We recently came across an interesting viral video about a faked prison break used to promote a Dutch magazine’s special issue on criminals (English translation). The video depicts a group of young guys hastily getting together a projector to fake a prisoner climbing out of his window in a famous prison complex called Bijlmerbajes.
The video pairs with the magazine’s special section and commentates on the recent criticism of prison breaks in nearby Belgium. Projecting realistic images, even 3D ones, is becoming more popular and this Dutch magazine is hoping to cash in on the trend. Who knows what other tomfoolery [...]

Pop-Up Cafe Opens in Amsterdam
Addressing the need for mobility, flexibility and constant evolution in order to remain relevant in today’s “here today, gone tomorrow” environment, the Pop-Up Cafe opened in Amsterdam as a temporary exhibition, running until August 2nd at Meneer de Wit Gallery. According to the website, the Pop-Up Café ”looks and functions as a café – a place where you can socialize, drink coffee, experience art, read books & attend events – all within the pop-up theme. Imagine fold-able stools, paper walls, pop-up ceramics, one-off events, a pop-up bookstore, how-to lectures, dinners & brunches.”
We expect to continue to see similar retail and art [...]

Minibar: The Self-Serve Nightclub
Minibar, a new concept that recently opened in Amsterdam that offers a solution to the frustrations of ordering a drink at a crowded bar. The owners did away with the bartender all together and instead allow customers to serve themselves from one of 45 private mini-bars. They wanted the experience to be more like inviting your friends to hang out in a hip hotel room, than standing in line waiting for a drink at a regular bar.
Once inside, you check in with the concierge, they give you a key to your own fridge and then you serve yourself. A [...]
