The Bicycle Photography of San Francisco
Mash SF, a hardcore group of cyclists, have produced a particularly stunning collection of images from around the world of their tightly-knit community. The mostly black and white photographs portray their culture and obsession with all things bicycle. Massan, a prolific photographer of their crew, has amassed a great collection of images on his personal site, including the photographs displayed below in the gallery. The vibrant society of bike messengers and other worshipers of fixed gear or even brake-less bicycles have bred some incredible media and it’s a pleasure to see the content produced. The rider and assumed photographer Massan [...]

Bikes Help Water City Trees
Casey Trees, a non-profit dedicated to planting trees in the Washington DC area, recently unveiled a new program to mulch and water trees with custom bikes fitted with trailers. The Water-by-Cycle project is the first of its type in the nation and the inaugural ride allowed tree care over a wider range than previously possible. The custom bike trailers carry hoses that hook up to city fire hydrants and have full permission from the DC Water and Sewage Authority. The bikes allow for the field crew to water newer trees with specialized care without requiring a parking spot or a [...]

Core77’s Limited Edition Cruiser Celebrates NYC Heritage and Craftsmanship
Core77’s limited-edition bicycle, the Dutch Master, combines a number of our favorite trends as of late – two-wheeled transportation, local craftsmanship and provenance – into a stunning piece of rideable design that pays homage to New York City.
They explain the thinking behind the project:
The Dutch Master is based on the beloved Worksman cruiser frame–a workhorse foundation used throughout the New York delivery community, and manufactured in Queens, New York for over 110 years. Core77 customized the frame, fitting it out with a carefully curated set of components, each with its own story.
The bike was hand-built by KT Higgins, a Brooklyn-based [...]

LightLane Coming Soon
Back in February we reported on a conceptual product called LightLane that would create a virtual bike lane using lasers projected behind the rider. Due to the overwhelming response from bikers around the globe and its success at design competitions, the folks behind the idea have decided to put it into production. As of right now, it’s in the “production engineering” phase, but it’s already looking great.
LightLane will hopefully provide cyclists with some much needed safety on car-cluttered roads and we have high hopes for the forthcoming commercial product. The LightLane currently uses two Diode-Pumped Solid State green lasers to [...]

Repair, Reuse & Cycling Up At Halfords
Green activists have been asking the rest of us to repair, reuse and recycle for years now but it looks like it’s had to take a recession for us to listen. A car parts chain called Halfords in the UK says that it’s growing sales in this economy is due to people deciding to fix their old cars or save money by jumping on a bicycle. The Telegraph reports:
Chief executive David Wild, who has been in the top job for almost a year, said the company will be increasing its focus on bikes as more people use cycling as [...]

Sleek GoCycle Bike Uses Motor & Pedal Power
Former McLaren design engineer Richard Thorpe has created an electric bicycle that can switch effortlessly between motor and pedal power, and looks great while doing it. The GoCycle is made through an advanced fabrication technique usually reserved for laptops and cell phones, constructed with injection-molded magnesium. Avoiding carbon fiber manufacturing cut the GoCycle’s cost down to a fifth, but the bike still comes to a steep £1,158—though Thorpe’s company is pursuing a government-sponsored employer subsidy.

Biker Bar Provides Clean (and Social) Power
Providing grassroots, social power for grassroots, social events, Rock the Bike’s ‘Biker Bar‘ system boasts a clever—and fun—way of generating juice for any off-the-grid gathering. The Biker Bar consists of an 8 foot trailer and a rotating shaft that captures the energy of attached bicycles—and any ordinary bikes will do the trick. The company claims four “regular” bikers are capable of providing a steady 300 watts of completely clean AC electricity, with peaks of up to 1000 watts; enough to create what they call a “pedal powered stage,” with speakers, mixers, and even lighting.

The Bamboo Bike Studio is a Brooklyn-based venture which teaches people to create their own bike frame out of the renewable and “performance-positive” material, bamboo. Working in collaboration with the Earth Institute at Columbia University and the Millennium Cities Initiative, the studio offers a two-day course where bike enthusiasts can learn building techniques and when the weekend is over, ride away on the finished product.
The BBS customises each bike to it’s rider, and attendees of the course can work off two bike body styles – ‘Local‘ for the casual, ‘mellow’ rider; and ‘Express’ – suitable for intermediate, urban cyclists who [...]

We noticed this rather stylish rack to park your bicycles in Tribeca last weekend. It also has seating for weary or over-pumped legs.
Anyone have any information on it?
