IDEO has developed a free guide tailored for NGOs to develop solutions to social programs. The Human Centered Design Process Guide is over 150 pages of case studies and step-by-step instructions on how to develop innovative solutions to pressing problems.
It’s broken down into different phases and comes with a set of Aspiration Cards. What’s interesting about this free-source is how in-depth it is, and how much it reveals about the company’s internal processes.
You can download the complete guide here.

Hoping to replace the cramped, dingy trailers that have been implemented to ease California’s terribly overcrowded classrooms (ranked among the worst in the US), Project FROG is designing overflow educational space that is both conducive to learning and green. FROG’s classrooms are made of prefabricated, modular structures that can be arranged to match each school’s varying size and space needs, and maximize exposure to natural light (found to boost standardized test scores).

When it comes to utilizing design or creative thinking to shape our society, few avenues are more direct or have more potential than reaching out and fostering a commitment to social responsibility within our schools and our children. An interesting newcomer to this form of education is Design Ignites Change, an initiative created by Worldstudio Projects and Adobe’s Youth Voices, which promotes and encourages high school students to use design thinking to solve real world problems. Fostered through a mentoring program which pairs creative professionals or university organizations with area high schools, the projects address a range of issues from [...]

Next year, Birmingham City University in the UK will be offering a one-year master’s degree course in social media. Students will learn the ins and outs of social networking applications as public relations, communications and marketing tools. Designed to accessible to anyone, the course takes a scholarly look at services like Facebook, Twitter, Bebo and so on.
Although learning the nuances of social media in the business world may have a place as part of a larger curriculum, it seems like too little to base an entire Master’s program on. Early responses to the class have people scratching their heads at [...]

We’ve noticed a few Kumon Centers popping up around the city lately and been intrigued by the strangely ambivalent smiley face. The centers provide an educational system for learning math and reading skills. And while they’re new to New York, the company itself has been around for 50 years.
Whether kids use the programs for remedial help or enrichment, the system remains the same: they start with the basics and use practice worksheets to learn new concepts. Students don’t advance until they’ve mastered the material, demonstrating both speed and accuracy. In the math program, for example, there are over 1,000 worksheets [...]

Union Square Ventures recently held a session on Hacking Education. The goal of the gathering was to discuss the impact of the web on education, and how to innovate current educational systems. Jeff Jarvis was there, and offers up the entire “Google U” chapter from his What Would Google Do? book, which explores education in the age of Google. For more on the Hacking Education, check out the site, or follow the conversation on Twitter.
Jarvis begins:
Who needs a university when we have Google? All the world’s digital knowledge is available at a search. We can connect those who want to [...]

Richard Buckland is a computer science lecturer at the University of NSW who has pioneered the use of YouTube videos as learning aids at Australian universities. Seeing a need for more challenging computing classes in high schools, Buckland is now offering a class for high school students based almost entirely on the recordings of his first-year computing lectures.
High school students who want to learn more about computing and mathematics can take this advanced, first-year university level class for free. While studying the video lectures at home, participants will only have to come to the university one night a week for [...]
