Volkswagen have released a new campaign to support the launch of their latest vehicle, the VW Tiguan. Called The People’s Reviewer, they rolled out a search for a new type of car reviewer. Over 1000 people applied for the role via YouTube and email entries. This was whittled down to nine contestants, who were then given the opportunity to drive the Tiguan for a week, try out its features, and record a short video review. Starting September 3rd, the public will vote for the best, and the winner will take home a Tiguan. There’s something in it for the public [...]

People are sharing bit.ly briefened links to video taken and uploaded minutes before and other protesters in Tehran hold their phones up high to record and share their activity with Iran and the outside world.
The developments in the use of the web to share, access, edit and discuss information about the crisis in Iran show just how modern news organizations are failing to deliver news in the way the public want to seek it.
Iranians and observers abroad are using right this minute Twitter, blogs, Flickr and YouTube to share information about what is happening within Iran at a speed that [...]

In the past month, a debate about photographic techniques has developed over the best method of capturing an image effectively. A recent essay on the New York Times Lens Blog argues that so-called “slow photography” allows the photographer to find the right moment and frame everything precisely. Fred R. Conrad discusses more in his essay, Slow Photography in an Instantaneous Age:

When doing portraits, it enables the photographer to talk and listen to subjects, [...]

Using 35 million geotagged photographs from Flickr, David Crandall and a team from Cornell University have created accurate global and city maps from the data alone. Plotting the raw data from the photos (geotags, text descriptions, key visual features) onto a blank canvas revealed the planet’s familiar landscape, as well as where in the world people were placing their attention. They also discovered some interesting facts from the experiment, such as: New York is the world’s most photographed city (12 million images), and the midtown Apple Store is the fifth most photographed location in the city.

We stumbled upon these photos today, a handful of the hundreds of beautiful shots included in the High Speed Photography pool on Flickr. The group consists mostly of droplets and an assortment of liquids frozen in time, all shot with “1/10000th Second Flash Exposure or Faster”. But our favorites are these by Alan Sailer that capture scenes a little less serene: bullets as they enter and exit (and destroy) their targets. The bottom photo shows “orange jello experiencing small scale hydrodynamic shock from a .177 pellet”. (If you ever wondered what that would look like…now you know…)

Getty Images partnered with Flickr last year to create a database of photos intended for commercial licensing. After months of sorting through the thousands of candidates, the editorial staff of Getty Images picked their favorites. The catalog of Flickr’s 3 billions images from more than 35 million members is truly daunting, but Getty Images is hoping to add thousands of new photos to the new Flickr Collection every month.
The images are meant to be a living collection and are a selection of vibrant moments captured on camera. Flickr has a wonderful collection of spontaneous portraits and individualistic images that hold [...]

Technology is generally meant to make life easier, but often users are bogged down in complicated process with programing, uploading and sharing their many different gadgets. Eye-Fi, the maker of location-aware memory cards that can wirelessly upload data, has continued to expand their capabilities. Just this week, they added a new card that can wirelessly upload video and another that can automatically geotag your video.
The system automatically uploads your data onto sites you deem appropriate, such as Flickr, YouTube or Facebook. The newest geotagging-enabled card automatically labels your photos by location and lets you upload from more than 10,000 WiFi [...]

It started as a blog by Muggerzifter with a few simple rules:
I put the self-timer on 2 seconds, push the button and try to get as far from the camera as I can.
So far, he’s spent the past year+ dashing away from spots all over Rotterdam. Is this the next camera toss?

The internet is awash with images. Many professional photographers see this explosion of access as a devaluation of the art form, but most revel in the leveling of the playing field. Images from the dozens of popular photo sharing sites are tagged, ranked and categorized in a mostly democratic system. For Wikipedia and other educationally centered sites, the encyclopedic value of these photos has improved dramatically with time.
The legal status of images has stifled their appearance online, but as national archives from around the world recognize the cultural significance of their holdings, they are more prone to release them. A [...]

On the heels of our interview with Justin Saunders, we’re directed to another minimalist website ihardlyknowher.com, a service that allows users the ability to view and share Flickr photos in an easy to navigate, streamlined manner. The site has been designed by Muxtape – a site that has recently found a second life – creator Justin Oulette as a means to eliminate the distractions and somewhat awkward interface of the Flickr site. The simplicity allows the photographs to stand on their own merits and more closely resembles the feeling of paging through an actual photo album, albeit in a vertical format.
