Designer Philip Hermes offers his futuristic design for connected city, albeit in a slightly more tangible way. Hermes envisions an underground delivery network that could transport packages as big as a shoe box across a city in as little as ten minutes. Think subway system meets pneumatic tube pipeline.
The conceptual project, named Urban Mole, calls for upgrading the preexisting infrastructure that runs beneath the streets – aka sewer tubes – with electrical rails that could power the Mole’s motors as it moves throughout the pipeline. Local hub stations would [...]

Even though newspapers are arguably more popular than ever before, instead of seeing higher profits, the reality is they’re earning less – a fact that is leading to industry wide buyouts, reductions in staff and in some cases, permanent closures. The current model of how newspapers operate is clearly broken and the biggest contributing factor, might be us.
During the ongoing transition from print to online, we’ve come to expect the same amount and quality of content we’re accustomed to, only now we want it for free. A bitter pill that traditional media outlets have been able to swallow in the [...]

Following this past Tuesday’s panel discussion on Good Ideas for the Future, where a group of cultural and business experts discussed how they believe 2009 will pan out, PSFK’s regular contributors were invited to take the stage and share a good idea of their own.
We encouraged everyone to look back through all their previous articles from the past year and share one idea that they personally found inspiring. From urban projections to ambient social activities, this short video clip provides a nice round up of 2008 and will hopefully provide a bit of inspiration for you in 2009.

Concluding our series of Good Idea Salons, last night’s panel spoke about good ideas for the future. A daunting topic, the conversation covered everything from whether or not business fundamentally has the ability to find a balance between being ‘good’ and turning a profit to greenwashing and the environment to the possibility that the current economic crisis might actually be a good thing.
Moderated by Piers Fawkes (PSFK), the panel includes Bart Haney (fuseproject), Danielle Sacks (Fast Company), Polly LaBarre (Mavericks at Work), and Tamara Giltsoff (OZOlab).
