The light bulb is the key image used to represent the moment an idea is sparked. The Economist wants to know exactly where these epiphanies happen.

Thinking Space is an exercise in interactive sharing and discovery. A stunning 3-D micro-site is the visual playground where the question is posed and answered. Clicking on the “Explore” button reveals the intimate launch pads of nine people, ranging from writers and musicians to CEOs. Each thinking space is divided into cubes when rotated and aligned together create the original photograph. The red dots appearing on the image one reveal detailed audio clips [...]

PingPongPlus, a digital project out of MIT, brings an element of interactivity to the traditional game of table tennis, with a surface that visually reacts to the game as it happens. Projectors work in conjunction with sensors that detect the movement of the ball, causing effects such as water ripples upon impact. The ball’s motion also influences the rhythm of the accompanying music. The MIT team hopes PingPongPlus will let players explore “new ways to couple athletic recreation and social interaction with engaging digital enhancements.”

Japan’s visual and technologically-focused culture sets it up for creating killer interactive work. When Projector, a small unknown digital shop in Tokyo, won last year’s Cannes Titanium for Uniqlock, people started taking notice. Iain Tait, a co-founder of Poke, recently posted a list of “9 reasons why Japanese interactive work is awesome” on his blog, Crackunit.com. The list is based on his experience judging this year’s One Show Interactive Awards and observing that the most outstanding work seems to be coming from Japan. Although he makes the disclaimer that his observations are based on assumptions and generalizations, he [...]

Opening last week at the Design Museum in London was their annual review of the most innovative, interesting and forward-looking new work in design of all kinds, from around the world. The exhibition, called the ‘Brit Insurance Designs of the Year’, presents around 100 projects divided into seven categories – architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport.
We’re happy to see the Westminster School (which we covered previously) included in the architecture category. This batch of projects was selected by a group of internationally respected design experts, curators, critics, practitioners, and enthusiasts. Awards will be announced next week. Bronx Rhymes is an interactive project that combines physical location and digital mobility to trace the roots of hip-hop in the Bronx where the genre is said to have been born. The project is the brainchild of interactive designers, Masha Ioveva and Claudia Bernett, as a means of exploring different facets of musical history across a variety of mediums. An unlikely pair to serve as the ambassadors of hip-hop perhaps, but with their thoughtful approach the duo has created an engaging portrait that chronicles the early days of rap, while leaving plenty of room for it to grow.
