In a joint project with Republic Services and Ameresco Services, The Anheuser-Busch brewery in Houston will have its energy demand supplied by more than 55% from biogas. Connected by pipelines with the Macarty Road Landfill, the gas is carried to the facilities to generate steam energy for the brewery’s power plant.
Landfill biogas consists of approx. 50 percent methane, a green house gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide, and is created when organic material decomposes in landfills. It can be converted into alternative fuels, heat, steam or used to generate electricity.

Supermarkets “Should Pay For Consumer Recycling”
Reacting to the statistic that the UK generates around 25 million tonnes of household waste per year, much of which ending up in landfill, a local government think tank in Britain has put forward an idea that supermarkets should be held responsible for over-packaging the products they sell and therefore have to pay for recycling costs. In a report entitled ‘War On Waste’, the Local Government Association argues that by levying a charge for supermarkets on the the collection of their packaging they will be incentivised to cut back. Trash And Recycling Not Recession Proof
As the economy goes, so too does our trash and as people tighten their belts and spend fewer dollars, they’re also reusing more and throwing out less. The LA Times reports on some telling statistics in cities across California:
Over the last six months, operators at Puente Hills Landfill [in Los Angeles], among the nation’s largest, have noted a 30% decrease in tonnage from neighboring municipalities. The dump used to close at noon because it would reach its daily tonnage limit; now it stays open all day without hitting that mark.
