(Pic) Novita Restaurant Is Not So Cool
While two industrial air-conditioning units churn all day and night at the back of this New York restaurant, the windows and the door are wide open letting the hot summer air in. I actually went in and complained last night about it and the manager gave me a crappy answer that the windows were open because some customers think it’s warm in there and others think it’s cool. I challenged him on this and he shrugged.
We seem to be so infatuated with the sustainability behind the food we eat these days but not so interested in how poorly those serving [...]

(Pics) Bottled Water “Causes Blindness In Puppies”
Tappening is an educational campaign from BPA-free refillable flasks. It is designed to encourage the public to drink tap water whenever possible and also aims to send a message to the bottled water industry about its “unnecessary and extreme waste of fossil fuels and resultant pollution of the Earth”. We found their rather fun fly-posters on the wall of a deserted building site on 22nd & 3rd Avenue in New York.

(Pics) Last of the Phone Booths
Infrastructurist has compiled a fantastic gallery of some of the last remaining full-size phone booths in New York City. Once a standard feature of any urban landscape, these days, any kind of phone booth seems like an anachronism. With the advent of ubiquitous mobile phone use these little phone-call stations are next to obsolete, but hopefully some kind of new purpose can be found for these structures.

Walk a little too fast and you might miss it, but nestled in the heart of Brooklyn off the Jefferson L train, a group of artists, activists, and golf lovers have turned a tiny slice of abandoned property into a nine-hole miniature golf course called THE PUTTING LOT. While PSFK reported on in it’s eminent opening in May , this golf course isn’t merely for recreational use- it’s become part of a master plan of it’s creators to promote sustainability, urban renewal, and eco-consciousness. Each of the nine putting holes was designed by a different team of artists and architects [...]

A Closer Look at Roxy Paine’s Maelstrom: Dendroids in the City
With a peculiar sculpture piece based on a system of “Dendroids,” American artist Roxy Paine has created a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Roof Garden. It is an interesting combination of concepts – Paine uses both mechanical means and the innate logic of natural forms to create his “Dendroid” tree-like sculptures. Like in nature, these are a series of vascular networks, tree roots, mushrooms, and fungal mycelia. His meticulous research and observation of a variety of tree species help him to understand the nuances of how a tree grows. Paine has said:
“I’ve processed the [...]

A Luxury Wi-Fi HotSpot
New York now probably has the grandest Wi-Fi hotspot in the country. Yesterday, the New York Public Library opened its elegant Edna Barnes Salomon Room in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building as a reading room specifically for online users. In recent years, the room has been used mostly for special exhibitions and rental space for private engagements.
Built in 1911, the Schwarzman Building houses the library’s research collection. The Beaux-Arts room is decorated in the classical style with 4,500 square foot of rectangular space and boasts dark maple wood floors. It has seating for 128 people on brown leather chairs and [...]

A Clearing in the Streets
Standing out from the concrete surfaces and benches of New York’s Collect Pond Park is a ten-sided wooden structure entitled “A Clearing in the Streets.” Commissioned by the Public Art Fund, the installation is meant as a visual intervention, forcing a spaciotemporal instance of the organic within the context of the urban. Although the miniature meadow behind the installation’s wooden panels is small, the project’s creators explain that:
Our collective urban vision is at a point where we need to broaden the definition of “nature” in the city. While there may not be many opportunities to build large-scale parks, there [...]

NY State Government to Phase Out Water Bottles
The NY Times reports that New York Governor David A. Paterson signed an executive order on Tuesday calling on state agencies to phase out the use and purchase of bottled water in all government workplaces. Citing both economic and environmental reasons, the move seeks to gradually replace both single use bottles and water coolers in favor of tap water fountains and dispensers, setting a strong precedent for local government, businesses and residents to follow suit.
A press release from the governor’s office explains:
Bottled water is wasteful and requires large amounts of energy to bottle and transport. Over 450 million gallons of [...]
