PSFK had noticed that earlier this year that the number of the Monocle magazine video podcasts had declined and the lifestyle-meets-business-meets-travel publication had even experimented with video podcasts which had slideshows of images with accompanying narrator rather than moving image. Meanwhile the weekly and summer special podcasts had become popular and we wondered if the change had been made just because it’s easier and cheaper to produce audio than video content . Forget the Death of Newspapers, Magazines are Becoming a Form of Radio

Michael Surtees shares some interesting thoughts about the bizarre situation of media shape-shifting that is happening these days. He explains how after he stopped subscribing to the bulky print version of the New York Times, he discovered via micro-blogging site Twitter that the Economist magazine has a word-for-word audio recording of it’s issues available for download. After all this jumping around in different media worlds, Surtees discovers the usefulness of the audio version of the magazine, and sees a future in this kind of media-hybrid.

National Public Radio is offering their audience an extra level of functionality by providing a tool that allows user to create personalized podcast feeds that can be uploaded to any mobile device.  This new feature enables listeners to enter their various interests, ranging from general topics like music and politics to more specific subjects like The Beatles and Barack Obama, into search fields that then find and aggregate the clips in one location.  Although relatively easy to use, those seeking the most tailored content will have to spend a little time experimenting with the technology to discover the best mix.
