The Happy Farm game on Chinese social networking sites is one of the most popular and particularly among white-collar workers. Some Happy Farm enthusiasts enjoy virtual farming so much that they have decided to try out the real thing. One Shanghai farm is planning to jump on the trend and put up 100 cabins for city farmers to use during extended holidays.

Walking through the Shanghai subway recently, we noticed a rack of “Coqui” (小青蛙) shoes which looked incredibly similar to Crocs, which have been popular in Shanghai for the past few years.

We’ve been following the shared workspace trend globally for a few years now and have been noticing a uptick in the number of co-working spaces in China lately. We’ve been particularly impressed by the efforts of the newly-opened Xindanwei (新单位) in downtown Shanghai, who joins a few other shared workspaces sprinkled throughout the city.

In the latest report to track China’s wealthiest people, we learn that Beijing has the most multimillionaires in China. The Hurun Report’s newest publication titled “China’s New Aristocrat Consumption Threshold Report” lays out the details on Beijing’s estimated 143,000 multimillionaires and 8,800 billionaires. In comparison, Shanghai has 116,000 multimillionaires and 7,000 billionaires.

This funky design from British designer, Thomas Heatherwick will be the new UK pavilion at the Shanghai Expo in 2010.  The pavilion will be used as a seed bank with the largest collection of wild seeds in the world courtesy of the Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank partnership.

We’ve been noticing more stringent enforcement of traffic laws at Shanghai’s major intersections over the past few months. At one of Shanghai’s busiest intersections, we recently noticed an interesting voting booth / suggestion box created by LEGO.
The “Satisfaction Post” (满意柱) allows citizens to vote on whether they are satisfied or not with the local police’s ability to control traffic.  Placing a red ring on a small plastic pillar means “satisfied,” while a blue ring means “unsatisfied.” Below the ringed voting system is a slit to submit any feedback.

We recently caught up with Cairn Wu, the founder of Kaileeni, to discuss her designer brand as well as what is happening in the Shanghai fashion scene.  Growing up in California, Cairn has brought her appreciation of vintage design to Shanghai and hopes to be part of China’s rapidly evolving fashion scene.  Cairn gives us her take on the flashy fashion of emerging markets and tells us what she finds inspiring in Shanghai.

Mattel has been hyping their massive flagship store in Shanghai for a while now and this past weekend, the $30 million “House of Barbie” finally opened to generally rave reviews. Malcolm Moore of The Telegraph covered the opening, getting right to the point: “I’ll say it straight away – I think the store is the work of a clinical marketing genius and that it will be a huge success in Shanghai. “

This past January, Split Works organized the first annual “JUE Festival” in Shanghai and Beijing to celebrate creative, alternative culture in China.  The JUE festival brought together a mix of live shows and visual arts performances in both cities over a ten day period to attract 12,600 attendees.
Music highlights included performances from up-and-coming indie Chinese label Maybe Mars as well as foreign musicians South Rakkas Crew and ENFANT TERRIBLE.  On the visual arts side, JUE showcased work from artist Chen Hang Feng and tatoo artist Wang Tingting.
