Living out in the wilds of Idaho, I have to wait ‘till mid-day to get my hard copy fix of the New York Times… Yeah, I know I can get most of it online hours before, and I usually do. But shit, that’s not the same as spilling your breakfast beer over the print edition and making the ink soak into the tablecloth, so your wife can give you a huge bollocking to start her day on a high note… Anyway, I digress. I look forward to the Sunday edition. Yes, it is boat anchor sized. But also, it has [...]

It’s no secret that social media is a driving force in the way big businesses are marketing themselves to consumers. These networking tools create open channels of communication between companies and customers, giving a face to formerly impersonal corporations through employee blogs, Twitter updates and playful Facebook applications. Customers are able to engage with the brands they buy in meaningful ways never before thought possible (or allowable) by sharing their experiences in a variety of ways ranging from feedback and innovations to photos and video.
But simply saying your business uses this methodology doesn’t guarantee instantaneous success. The demographic that is reached [...]

For many, Google epitomizes the successful modern company, but like nearly every sector in the economy, they are being forced to slim down under the rippling effects of the recession. The first step was to reduce the recruiting organization by 100 positions and slowly ratchet down new hires. The next step was to close down products that didn’t make economic sense for Google to hold onto.
The microblogging service Jaiku, which Google acquired for a reported $12 million, will be shutting down along with Dodgeball, the mobile social networking site. Google Catalog Search, another service on the chopping block, will be [...]

At some point the anonymity of the internet transformed into a social networking clearinghouse of daily minutiae and most of us willingly opted in, choosing the ease and comfort of virtual intimacy over a lonely existence of real world disconnectedness. And these communities blossomed, starting with close friends and family then expanding to include co-workers and long lost childhood chums, finally welcoming obscure acquaintances and total strangers with whom we’ve never had a face to face conversation. We decided that to know and be known was a good thing, but never really thought it through.
And now, regardless of who these people [...]

Michael Surtees, the man behind DesignNotes, recently posted an interesting piece on new media’s role in delivering breaking news. He looked specifically at the interaction between different media sources with regards to the crash of Flight 1549 into the Hudson River. Just by keeping up to date on his tweets, tracking down live video and photographs, Surtees was able to stay involved with the events as they took place. In his article he highlights how one could follow events through a variety of sites as long as they know where to look. DesignNotes reflects on the day’s activity:

On January 9th, video content provider Hulu removed several seasons of the popular F/X series, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia“ from their website with no advance warning. Despite Hulu’s general stance on taking down content (they would prefer not to do it), such moves are sometimes necessary to comply with the networks who own the original rights.
