Top 25 Most Liveable Cities 2009 – Monocle

Top 25 Most Liveable Cities 2009 - Monocle

Monocle Magazine have announced their annual index of most liveable cities. Zurich comes in top place mainly for its vast investment in transport; Copenhagen is second for its mix of metropolitan life, great healthcare, low crime rates and a relaxed vibe; at 3, Monocle describes Tokyo as the world’s most livable megapolis and praises the city’s commitment to plant 1 million trees; 4th is Munich which blends history and innovation with ease and is generally a good place to do business; and Helsinki comes 5th partly because it has no Starbucks. Rising Online Volunteer Network from Down Under

Rising Online Volunteer Network from Down Under

Seek, an Australian online job search firm, is finding social opportunities in this economic crisis. The company, with the help of The Boston Consulting Group, is using its technology platform to match volunteer do-gooders with non-profit organizations all over the country.

Australia already has a long-established history of corporations participating in community causes but the recent scarcity of jobs, the persistent drought and the tragic bushfires that erupted earlier this year is increasing national demand to reach out. Seek Volunteer – which claims to earn no revenues for its services – seems to have come at just the right time judging [...]

The Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project

The Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project

The IFF explains the technique:
In 1997 Dr Taimina discovered how to make models [...]

Video: Keith Loutit Envisioning Life in Miniature

Video: Keith Loutit Envisioning Life in Miniature

Sydney-based photographer Ken Loutit puts an extraordinary spin on the rather mundane events in life utilizing a variety of techniques and angles to capture the everyday in miniature. The process, called tilt-shift, refers to the movement of the camera – small or medium format – relative to the image being photographed, resulting in a bird’s eye perspective that re-imagines the commonplace. Loutit takes a series of stills and stitches them together to create short films that invite the viewer to take a second look at the world around us.
The video below depicts the parade route during this year’s Mardi Gras [...]

Fresh Take on Ugly Construction

Fresh Take on Ugly Construction

Unsightly construction scaffolding could soon be a thing of the past for Sydneysiders.  Under the new City of Sydney plan, scaffolding typically covered in construction mesh may soon be replaced with large images and artworks.  A few Sydney construction sights have already ‘wrapped’ their scaffolding.  Westfields Pitt Street Mall development drew on bright artworks from the Museum of Contemporary Art; whereas the historic Myer site of Market and George St took a subtler direction, replicating a scale image of itself over the construction.
City of Sydney spokesman explains the plan:
Current industry practice is to use green or black mesh on the [...]
