The 3D Experience Expands Aggressively onto the Homefront

The 3D Experience Expands Aggressively onto the Homefront

Fans of three dimensional flicks rejoice, the immersive experience is headed towards home television. Satellite-TV operator British Sky Broadcasting is taking steps to launch an entirely 3D channel in the U.K. sometime next year. It will be the largest push for three dimensional television yet with the company brainstorming content ideas beyond pure “gimmicks.”
Price will initially remain a hurdle for the technology to become widely adopted. To view Sky’s content, expensive 3D ready television sets are necessary. The cost of the subscription service itself has not yet been specified.
3D television shows are nothing new. Ever since NBC’s 1989 Super Bowl [...]

Do Not Attempt to Adjust Your Superhetrodyne Receiver. We are in Charge!

Do Not Attempt to Adjust Your Superhetrodyne Receiver. We are in Charge!

It’s interesting that just as the unwashed TV watching masses are coping with the drama of going completely digital, within days the annual opera buffo show known in the trade as the “Cannes Lions” will take place.
As the Adverati sit through screenings of the latest TV spots Brazil, Dubai and Timbuktu’s finest have come up with (all of which for some reason seem to have been shot with an English sound track) Joe Bob will be kicking the shit out of his ten year old Wal-Mart set, ‘cos that Godamn converter box doesn’t work with his bent wire, coat hanger [...]

The Perilous Future of Television

Over the past decade traditional television content has quickly migrated to our computers and as consumers demand easier access to media, major content providers are clamoring to be ahead of the curve.  Entertainment industry executives met at conference earlier this year hoping not to get caught off guard like the music and newspaper industries, but a dominant solution has yet to surface.  The Future of Television conference, hosted by Digital Media Wire, brought together an impressive collection of speakers who struggled to come to a coherent conclusion.

Live TV App Coming to the iPhone?

Live TV App Coming to the iPhone?

When The Business Insider reported recently that PacketVideo, a mobile multimedia software company, was releasing an iPhone app with Live TV, it seemed like a dream come true.  However, there are many reasons to doubt its arrival, including technical and contractual issues.  For one, the company does not have a track record with Apple or AT&T and the iPhone does not have a TV-tuner.  Streaming live TV through WiFi is already possible with OrbLive, but it is only possible within range of your home tuner.
CBS recently unveiled its custom video app earlier this week, but it has few full episodes [...]

France to Limit Children's Access to Mobile Phones

Hot on the heels of a 2008 ban on television programs for kids under 3, France is getting strict with new rules which will limit children’s usage and access to mobile phones. New laws prohibit advertising aimed at children under the age of 12 and bans the sale of cell phones designed for kids under 6. New limits on the allowable amount of radiation emitted from phones, and laws mandating bundled headphones with every phone will be put in place as well. Although this ban is unique in Europe, France joins a growing number of countries including Canada, Russia and [...]

90% of DVR Owners Skip TV Ads

90% of DVR Owners Skip TV Ads

TV advertisers are facing a potential disaster as more consumers buy digital video recorders (DVRs), according to a new study, since about 90 percent of current users fast-forward through ads. The trends are even more foreboding among the 18 to 34-year-old demographic most coveted by marketers, with 97 percent saying they skip ads all or almost all of the time.
“This has always been advertisers’ biggest fear,” said Sarah Wade, a London-based account manager for the French market research firm Ipsos, which carried out a survey of 4,000 British TV households. A previous study by media buying agency PHD found that [...]
