Volkswagen have released a new campaign to support the launch of their latest vehicle, the VW Tiguan. Called The People’s Reviewer, they rolled out a search for a new type of car reviewer. Over 1000 people applied for the role via YouTube and email entries. This was whittled down to nine contestants, who were then given the opportunity to drive the Tiguan for a week, try out its features, and record a short video review. Starting September 3rd, the public will vote for the best, and the winner will take home a Tiguan. There’s something in it for the public [...]

Fans of three dimensional flicks rejoice, the immersive experience is headed towards home television. Satellite-TV operator British Sky Broadcasting is taking steps to launch an entirely 3D channel in the U.K. sometime next year. It will be the largest push for three dimensional television yet with the company brainstorming content ideas beyond pure “gimmicks.”
Price will initially remain a hurdle for the technology to become widely adopted. To view Sky’s content, expensive 3D ready television sets are necessary. The cost of the subscription service itself has not yet been specified.
3D television shows are nothing new. Ever since NBC’s 1989 Super Bowl [...]

The wedding entrance dance video that swept across the internet like a flash flood is revealing some interesting lessons in the business of YouTube copyright claims. Chris Brown’s song, “Forever” is used without permission in the video and his label could easily have sued or removed the video with a copyright claim. However, they decided to harness the power of the viral video and install and buy-now link for the hit single, reaping huge rewards in the process.

For the label, it’s all about the Benjamins, but in the future will this tactic encourage inventive re-appropriation of musical material, even beyond [...]

YouTube recently added 3D options for their videos, seizing on the growing trend to bring 3D content into our everyday lives. Whether in our online interfaces or in new cameras, three dimensional content is becoming more accessible. YouTube’s library of 3D videos is understandably sparse, but they have embedded options to suit your preferred viewing style.
The move brings 3D technology possibilities into a new arena and hopefully YouTube videos will surface that are actually enhanced by the third dimension such as this flower experiment, rather than otherwise flat videos like this example from Engadget. We don’t suggest viewing videos if [...]

Going viral, a phrase that in recent years has taken on an entirely new and positive spin, describing the phenomenon of an idea, image or video rapidly spreading across the web. And while marketers and laymen alike have tirelessly tried to ascertain the secret formula to unlocking its guarantee of success or at the very least, recognition, it’s more likely that the process is merely a perfect storm of uncontrollable forces like timing and luck. Still, what are your chances?
Chris Wilson over at Slate recently explored the possibility of a video reaching 1 million views on YouTube and [...]

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the French photographer behind film projects like “6 Billion Others,” recently released his latest project called Home that captures the beauty of our planet in a free film stressing the gravity of environmental issues. Arthus-Bertrand pioneered modern aerial photography and this latest project showcases an incredible selection of inspiring images from his ambitious project.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this project is that it’s completely not-for-profit and copyright-free, enabling the movie to freely circulate around the web. The high production values and original musical score were enabled by numerous sponsorships under the organization of the Good Planet Foundation. In [...]

People are sharing bit.ly briefened links to video taken and uploaded minutes before and other protesters in Tehran hold their phones up high to record and share their activity with Iran and the outside world.
The developments in the use of the web to share, access, edit and discuss information about the crisis in Iran show just how modern news organizations are failing to deliver news in the way the public want to seek it.
Iranians and observers abroad are using right this minute Twitter, blogs, Flickr and YouTube to share information about what is happening within Iran at a speed that [...]

BooneOakley’s innovative online presence opts out of a website in any traditional sense of the word, relying instead on the clever implementation of YouTube annotations to link together many shorter videos into a comprehensive overview of the agency. Visitors can check out news, contact information, as well as a host of the agency’s work sorted by both client and medium, all in the form of YouTube videos.

Google have announced that their video-sharing site YouTube will start to offer movies from major studios. CNET reports that the tech company has struck a deal with Sony Pictures, one of the largest Hollywood film studios, which allows YouTube to post full-length movies. Apparently YouTube said that it would add two new tabs to the top of its site – A ‘Shows’ tab which allows you to browse shows by genre, network, title and popularity and a ‘Subscriptions’ tab which will allow logged-in users one-click access to the latest content from their favorite creators.
