Ariel Waldman, SpaceHack.org: Can We Hack Space So Everyone Can Explore The Cosmos?

What would happen if space and space exploration were as open and accessible as the internet? Ariel Waldman, the founder of SpaceHack.org, discusses the possibilities at PSFK SF

What would happen if space and space exploration were as open and accessible as the internet? Ariel Waldman, the founder of SpaceHack.org, discusses what possibilities can be created through open source models of participation at the PSFK CONFERENCE SAN FRANCISCO.

Using the example of hacking space and science, Ariel describes how this process is about creating disruption and active participation. Opening up new environments and experiences changes our view of ourselves and our place in the universe, and does not have to be exclusively the realm of governments and billionaires. Technical knowledge isn’t an insurmountable barrier either; through open participation, anyone can explore any field of study or roam any planet.

Inspiring points from Ariel’s talk:

  • On SpaceHack.org you can participate in a number of projects that advance science and push the boundaries of human exploration
  • All these different modes of ‘invading space’ are founded on the idea that science and space should be open to public collaboration
  • The data and projects are out there, but many need to be made accessible to everyday people
  • Pursuing this kind of collaboration and opening space will lead to a citizen-scientist renaissance
  • By creating things that are so disruptively accessible, we can revolutionize scientific research and space exploration
