Bikestation: Providing A Safe Haven for Your Ride

In an effort to encourage more two-wheeled driving and less four, Long Beach, CA not-for-profit Bikestation is teaming up with 30 U.S. cities to provide protected parking garages for bicyclists. With advice from the Bikestation group, the municipalities will construct the structures – some as stand-alone facilities and others as add-ons to parking garages. Accessible 24/7 with a smart card key, the Bikestation garages cost users about $1 a day, $12 a month, or $96 a year. Some, like the one in Santa Barbara, CA, include more than just room for bikes, but also showers and a parts-dispensing vending machine. Also in the works: a $2 million bike-only garage (and rental shop) to open in 2008 near Union Station in Washington.
