Zipcar and Flexcar, the leading car share programs in America announced today that they have agreed to merge.  The combined company will operate under the Zipcar brand and maintain their headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.  Zipcar’s chief executive, Scott Griffith, will be chairman and CEO while Flexcar CEO Mark Norman will become president and chief operating officer.

Currently there are about 30 independent car sharing programs operating in the US.  With little geographic overlap, the newly combined fleet will significantly increase the number of available cars for drivers of both programs and solidify Zipcar the preeminent car sharing program in America, with members in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco reaping the greatest benefits (markets where both companies currently operate).   Additionally, the merge will also provide members with better driver’s insurance.
