Ponoko ID: Collaboratively-Designed Accessories
Back in 2007, we wrote about Ponoko, a New Zealand based company that lets its customers submit their own designs for “jewellry and everything else” for Ponoko to manufacture. Now the company has come up with an alternative for shoppers who want a custom-made piece but lack the creative sensibilities to design it. Ponoko ID allows the less artistically-inclined to leave the designing to the designers: customers submit their request for an item, with a detailed description of what colors, measurements, and materials they want used as well as any pics, sketches or videos that help explain how they want their piece to turn out. The brief is handed over to Ponoko, who then match the request up to designers interested in creating the item. Via email, designers offer their proposals to the shoppers, who then choose the best fit and come to a binding agreement with the chosen creator.
