Researchers have begun to model PageRank-inspired algorithms to better understand the inter-relatedness of species.

Realizing the similarities between the Internet that Google’s PageRank attempts to organize, and ecosystems of the natural world, researchers Stefano Allesina of the University of Chicago and Mercedes Pascual of the University of Michigan have begun to model PageRank-inspired algorithms to better understand the inter-relatedness of species.

Their work is uncovering new insights about the relative importance of species within ecosystems, giving researchers tools for predicting scenarios resulting from the impact of human influence or species’ extinction.
