Quick to state they are not “taggers, graffiti artists or vandals”, the Melbourne City Drain Painters are a group of light artists that turn their love of urban exploration into visual wonders.  Vowing to respect the locations they explore and shoot, the small group travel below the city through a number of concrete drain networks, where the dark, minimal spaces provide the perfect location for long-exposure photography.  The MCDP steer clear of image-editing software, using a number of different low-tech toys like glow sticks and disco balls to create the illuminated effects.  With ties to the Victorian chapter of Australia’s urban exploration group Cave Clan, the Melbourne City Drain Painters have five key members including a Bus Driver, IT Technician and a Call Center Operator.  See the group’s Flickr photostream for more light paintings.
