Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg, former members of IBM’s Visual Communication Lab recently announced their new venture, Flowing Media. It’s a consultancy aimed at telling data’s story beyond analytics, by asking the question: “Can visualization move beyond numbers into the realm of words and images?” The answer lies in design, strategy and development services, focused on visualization for consumers and mass audiences.
Sitting at the intersection of art, design and technology, the pair conceived Many Eyes, the first visualization tool of its kind to put data into the hands of a general audience, revealing the social side of visualization and the stories that emerged, equipping everyone from journalists to scientists. The end result of interactive graphics and realtime social media streams engage a mass audience by allowing data to do the talking through the discovery of hidden patterns.
