A new phone app allows shoppers to scan product barcodes and better inform purchasing decisions with environmental impact data.

German software scanning agency Barcoo has developed a free downloadable app that allows shoppers to identify a product's social responsibility ratings and environmental credentials while in-store.

By scanning the product's barcode with a mobile device, the app pulls up the item's green information, including how environmentally friendly the producer of a product is, the company's treatment of employees and the size of its carbon footprint. It operates on a colored ranking system: green (for top environmentally friendly products), amber (for items in the middle) and red (for unhealthy or wastefully produced items). Additionally, the app provides price comparison data, tips on product pairings for healthy meals and maps to find the item in alternative locations.
