India’s Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology, has undertaken an eco-awareness campaign called Captain Planet in the Making. Under this campaign, students design utility products, making use of readily available materials.

A solar cooker made from used plastic cups and plates, a sand-filled water filtration system made from plastic bags and bottles and an animal powered water pump are just few of the designs created by these students. The water pump saves the farmer a trip downstairs to the well to fetch water and irrigate his farm; instead, the water is drawn up through a series of small buckets and deposited into a small reservoir.

The common features of their projects are the low cost of production and extremely less construction time.
