Currently at the MoMA in NYC, larger-than-life performance artist Marina Abramović is being feted with her first major retrospective. This is no small feat, seeing as her body of work includes approximately fifty works, spanning over four decades and consisting of sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances, and collaborative studies. In an attempt to “transmit the presence of the artist and make her historical performances accessible to a larger audience” the exhibition will feature (in addition to first time re-performances of Abramović’s works by others) the artist herself -on hand and setting up shop. Titled The Artist Is Present , the piece centers around viewer participation and direct interaction with Abramović. In addition to being physically present, Abramović is challenging herself as an artist to live in the moment and reconnect with the type of work that originally made her a star.
