A recent project has illuminated the role of texting in child-parent interactions as well as student-to-student interactions.

Complimenting the recent questions around internet / technology addiction, the Riverdale Country School recently experimented with encouraging its middle-school students to participate in a 2-day fast from text messaging. The project has illuminated the role of texting in child-parent interactions as well as student-to-student interactions, as noted by the school’s counselor KC Cohen:

Kids will do poorly on a test, and more often than not, right away they’ll go into the bathroom and text their mom and dad,” she said. “There’s no sense that the kid just has to feel his feelings. It’s an instant Band-Aid.
