16-Year Old Australian Sails Around the World (& Blogs About It)
Jessica Watson recently became the youngest person ever to sail solo and unassisted around the world. Throughout the journey, Watson shared her experience with a global audience.
A few days ago, 16 year old Jessica Watson became the youngest person ever to sail solo and unassisted around the world. A Buderim, Queensland native, Jessica completed a 210 day voyage across 23,000 nautical miles at an age where many are concerned with lip gloss, celebrity crushes and high school gossip. Watson maintained a blog throughout her journey, recounting her experience during rough and smooth days, gaining encouragement from readers, and summarily maintaing her focus. With brands supporting and backing Watson’s journey, one might observe that even throughout this very human and personal journey, Watson took an integrated approach to sharing her experience with others, and gaining the support and encouragement that allowed her to complete it.
In speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Watson explained the reason for her journey;
I wanted to challenge myself and achieve something to be proud of. And yes, I wanted to inspire people. I hated being judged by my appearance and other people’s expectations of what a ‘little girl’ was capable of. It’s no longer just my dream or voyage. Every milestone out here isn’t just my achievement, but an achievement for everyone who has put so much time and effort into helping getting me here.
