Samsung India has launched a low-cost solar mobile phone, giving users in remote areas with little access to electricity a method for charging. While the charging rate of 5-10 minutes of talk time per hour of charge requires that the phone absorb 40 hours of sun to charge fully, the supplemental power gives many users in urban slums more mobility, autonomy, and access to basic services. At a cost of $60 the Samsung “Solar Guru” phone aims to be affordable to users in these areas.
