The iStethoscope app, available in the UK and US, allows medical practitioners to monitor heartbeats by turning a mobile phone into a pocket stethoscope. The smartphone is applied to the patient’s chest and the resulting waveform can be easily emailed out. The benefit is clear for patients who email a self-test to their physicians from home, but also for doctors working in remote field areas who can send results to a specialist. iStethoscope has been downloaded over three million times according to the BBC.
