imaGinyze is an iPhone application that takes advantage of real-time video recognition to create a simple platform for an augmented driving heads-up display. By mounting the phone in the car dashboard, the application can calibrate itself to the road and provide a visual overlay of lanes, upcoming vehicles, and road characteristics like pitch. imaGinyze also gives visual cues for proximity of vehicles and objects it detects, with shaded rectangles color-coded to reflect various distances. The application is certainly a rough execution of what AR-assisted driving systems will ultimately look like in the future, as detection systems become more accurate. But imaGinyze does point to how current capabilities could potentially inspire the development of systems that integrate these kinds of detection-based notifications directly into car functions.
