With internet-connected televisions quickly becoming the norm, saying that the content field is getting crowded has become a bit of an understatement. Add to that people’s growing tendency to multitask on their laptops, tablets and mobile phones, and media producers face an uphill battle to recapture their audience’s increasingly fractured attention spans. With social TV applications like Fox’s Glee app that allow fans to share their own renditions of songs featured on the show and ABC’s MY Generation app for the iPad that suggests additional content based on what’s taking place in each episode, we’re seeing early attempts at making television entertainment more interactive and immersive, but what happens when viewers have a say in the action unfolding on the screen?
