A synthetic DNA spray aids crime prevention in Rotterdam.

Rotterdam’s police department has deployed a preventive “DNA spray” system that marks criminals with a synthetic, invisible mist. When facing the problem of how to deal with a wave of petty crimes happening to an urban McDonald’s, the police offered the spray as a preventive solution by betting that the unknown powers of the mist would instill an element of fear, whereby the mark of “crime” might be forever imprinted onto the robber’s genetics.
