Next spring, the University of South Carolina will offer a course on the life and works of one of the biggest pop icons of our times.

The University of South Carolina will offer an unlikely course in the spring of 2011,”Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame.” Taught by Professor Mathieu Deflem, the course will teach students “a sociological analysis of selected social issues related to the work of Lady Gaga,” as its blog described it.

Professor Deflem, who is a big fan of the eccentric singer, said that more than the person, the course will look at her as a social event and study the roles played by the media, fans, culture and the marketing strategies behind her astronomical rise as a pop icon. Like most things associated to Gaga, the news of this course’s launch has gone viral and Deflem shouldn’t have too many problems attracting students to it.
