Designer uses an everyday device to fuse art with practicality.

Designer Patricia Urquiola recently developed a project that aimed to give a traditional artistic touch to the mobile phone. Taking inspiration from the form of castanets, the percussive instruments played in Spain and many Latin countries, the phone's body gets a dimpled skin and is accompanied by several accessories like a keypad, a tummy strap and earphones, all tagged to beautifully designed decorative pieces in various colors.

The project was commissioned by Italian design house Alessi and Japanese product manufacturer IIDA.
