Audience measurement firm comScore reveals the remarkable performance of Facebook as a leader in online advertising.

In a study that could seal the status of Facebook as the to-go source for online advertising, audience measurement firm comScore reports that the billion-dollar social networking site now accounts for 23 percent of all ad impressions in the United States. This number translates to 297,046 billion ad displays out of the 1.3 trillion delivered to online Internet users in the United States during the third quarter of 2010.

In stark contrast, search engine giant Google marked a mere 2.7 percent, with 35,043 billion ad displays in Q3 2010. comScore further reports that Facebook’s market share has increased 13.9 percentage points from 9.2 percent in Q3 2009.
