The successor to the classic Routemaster bus is one step closer to hitting the streets in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

Last week London's Mayor Boris Johnson debuted a mock-up of the new double-decker bus which will be manufactured in Northern Ireland. You'll remember that the design of the bus was the result of a competition established by Johnson to create an updated version of the iconic Routemaster bus. Architects Foster+Partners in partnership with Aston Martin were selected as the winning design team last May.

The new bus will be built by The Wright Group which has pioneered the offering low floor buses. The new double-decker will have an open platform in the back similar to the old Routemaster providing hop-on hop-off service for passengers.
