Located down a nondescript road on the outskirts of Wolfsburg, Germany is an office building with a humble sign over the entry reading ‘Volkswagen R GmbH’. From the parking lot in

front, there is not much remarkable about the site other than the imposing iron fence, razor wire, and prominent security cameras that extend around the back of the building and form a perimeter around several other structures. Within this guarded compound is Volkswagen’s factory speed shop. The facility was established to create specialty vehicles for the Volkswagen brand that have unique sporty and luxury characteristics. The aim is to make Volkswagen cars that are more emotional. PSFK got a peek inside the off-limits facility as well as an opportunity to test drive a 2010 Scirocco R on the autobahn.
