Known for creating the "Blood Lamp," designer Mike Thompson presents a lamp powered by arguably the simplest (and most ancient) of existing life forms.

Designer Mike Thompson has created a unique lamp powered by algae, dubbed the Latro Algae Lamp. Thompson draws inspiration from the findings of a research conducted by Yansei and Stanford University scientists, which states that the cells of algae can draw electrical current through photosynthesis.

Thompson explains:

Breathing into the handle of the lamp provides the algae with CO2, whilst the side spout allows the addition of water and release of oxygen. Placing the lamp outside in the daylight, the algae use sunlight to synthesize foods from CO2 and water.
