The worlds largest rental car brand will be the first to offer electric vehicle rentals in major cities.

December 15th, 2010 is the first day Hertz will offer electric vehicles for rent and has selected New York City to kick off the Hertz Global EV initiative. The company will make the next generation of electric vehicles available through their Connect by Hertz car sharing program. Shortly following the NYC launch, rental EV’s will be offered by Hertz in Washington DC and San Francisco. Eventually the program will be rolled out worldwide.

Hertz has placed orders for new electric vehicles with Nissan, GM, Toyota, smartUSA, and Mitsubishi. They are also working to form partnerships with charging station providers, local governments, and corporations to ease the transition to broader electric vehicle use.
