Not our theory, but this is what a recent research project undertaken at Northwestern University suggests. When people are in an amused state after just watching a comedy routine, they seem to get sudden insights out of the blue which help them to solve creative problems.

In such a positive state of mind, the brain widens its attention and makes it more open to distractions which enables it to establish loose connections, thereby helping them in solving puzzles.
