In a US first, a Los Angeles mall has installed a camera system which helps patrons identify and find their vehicle in the carpark. Santa Monica Place has introduced Park Assist’s Find Your Car‘ kiosks which allow customers to search for their vehicle by simply typing in their license plate number. Installed throughout the structure, the high resolution ‘M3 Camera Vision System’ scans each individual area, identifying the presence of number plates using imaging algorithms.

A number of privacy issues have been raised over the technology, with current U.S. law allowing those taking the footage to distribute the data to law enforcement, debt-repossessors, market researchers and anyone else should they feel the need.

Chris Calabrese of the American Civil Liberties Union warns;

What if a divorce attorney came and asked who was in the mall? Or someone looking to repossess vehicles for past nonpayment?…The unintended consequences can be huge.
