Film director Sebastian Guttierez plans on making his latest film the first major motion picture to be distributed via the Internet. A Girl Walks Into A Bar is set to officially debut at South By Southwest this March and will be released online for free at the same time. Guttierez wants to prove that the web is a viable distribution platform for film in a move that is somewhat similar to Steven Soderbergh’s concurrent distribution experiments. Web distribution techniques are not necessarily new and Guittierez acknowledges the changing indie landscape enough to know that it’s ready for Hollywood to adapt to this sea change. Many will argue the marketability of distributing a film for free online, but evidence has shown that you can have a sustainable free model.
